Recognizing the Beauty in My Uniqueness: The Journey of Accepting My Birthmark

GLAMOUR’s fourth annual Self-Love Special is here, celebrating women who use their platforms to raise awareness about misunderstood skin conditions and embrace their unique beauty. Becca Lee Brewer shares her story, revealing how makeup used to be her security blanket, helping her feel confident and beautiful. Becca was born with a blue nevus, a bluish birthmark resembling a bruise, and a port wine stain, a vascular birthmark causing a reddish-purplish discoloration of the skin. Her journey to self-love wasn’t easy, as she struggled to meet society’s unrealistic beauty standards. "My perception of beauty greatly impacted how I viewed my birthmark," Becca tells GLAMOUR. "Initially, beauty to me was defined by societal norms and focused solely on physical appearance. However, I learned that true beauty goes beyond the surface. Embracing my uniqueness allowed me to see my birthmark as something beautiful." Becca, originally from South Korea and adopted at eight months old, grew up in a small town in Northern Minnesota, USA. By the age of 12, she had already undergone more than 25 laser treatments on her birthmark, making it challenging to find body positivity, especially during her teenage years. "As a child, I despised my birthmark and felt extremely shy and introverted because of it," she recalls. "I vividly remember other kids staring and pointing at me. The most difficult times were after laser treatments when my face would be covered in dark purple spots. I couldn’t bear to look at myself in the mirror. Feeling different and out of place was something I struggled with as a child."
