Unveiling Ten Life-Altering Insights from My Journey as a Mother of an Autistic Child

I wanted to share some thoughts that have been weighing on me, partly to clear my mind and partly to offer support to others on the same parenting journey. Being a parent to an autistic child is undeniably tough, with plenty of challenges and obstacles to overcome. But remember, you’re not alone in this. Here are ten things I’ve learned since becoming a mother to an autistic child:

It took me a while to learn about autism too, especially when I noticed Margot wasn’t hitting her milestones. It’s essential to be patient with those who may not know much about it.

  2. The fight never ends. In today’s world, you have to fight for your child’s rights continuously. From getting a diagnosis to securing necessary appointments and services, the battle is ongoing. It’s exhausting, and sometimes you may feel like you’re fighting alone, but remember, many others are fighting similar battles behind the scenes.

  3. Every journey is unique. Autism affects each child differently, so comparing your child to others can lead to unnecessary stress. Avoid over-analyzing and questioning why your child may be different. Embrace your child’s uniqueness without feeling shame or guilt.

  4. People may unintentionally say offensive things. Some remarks, like ‘everyone is a little autistic,’ can be hurtful, even if not intended. It’s crucial to remember that people might not realize the impact of their words. Try not to take it personally and focus on what’s essential for you and your child.

  5. Support may come from unexpected places. Unfortunately, not everyone will offer the support you need, even those you thought would. It can be disheartening, but remember, it’s not your fault. Surround yourself with a supportive network of parents who understand your struggles.

  6. Connect with other SEN parents. Meeting other parents facing similar challenges can be a source of relief and strength. Seek out local support groups or online communities to share experiences, seek advice, and build friendships with those who understand.

  7. Social media can be a valuable resource. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram can connect you with valuable resources, support, and a sense of community. Follow accounts that provide information and insights into autism parenting to feel less isolated.

  8. Take time for yourself. Self-care is essential, even though it may seem challenging to find time for it. Whether it’s a short break, a day out, or a moment to yourself, prioritize your well-being to recharge and stay resilient.

  9. Keep trying, even when it’s tough. Everyday activities can be overwhelming for autistic children, but exposing them to these situations gradually can help them adapt. Stay resilient, plan ahead, and focus on your child’s progress, not others’ opinions.

  10. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, seek support from professionals and loved ones. Your mental health is crucial, and reaching out for assistance can make a significant difference in your well-being.
